BMW offers models that are larger, more comfortable, faster, and certainly more daring, but the X3 SUV remains the most popular vehicle in the Bavarian automaker's entire lineup. Neither too extravagant nor too conservative, it delivers just the right balance of luxury and prestige while maintaining a versatile character. The 2026 BMW X3 is a refined model that stays true to the very essence of the sport utility vehicle concept. In short, its success is clearly no coincidence.

There are no major changes for 2026, but we are nevertheless pleased to hear that the plug-in hybrid M Competition version could potentially return to the lineup. Otherwise, the BMW X3 remains a solid product with very few flaws.

Lineup and Pricing

The 2026 BMW X3 carries a starting price of $63,633 in its X30 version, which refers to its powertrain. Next in line is the M50 version, priced at $81,133. This represents a significant jump, but one that is well justified. The M50 offers a more engaging driving experience along with impressive performance. As is often the case with this type of vehicle, everything happens in the options list at BMW. The X3 offers a wide array of individual features that enhance its styling, comfort, and technology. In fact, this is the kind of vehicle where you don't want to limit yourself to the base equipment, since nearly every other X3 you come across will look better than yours. That said, moderation is key, as it doesn't take long to approach the $100,000 mark if you get carried away.

Category and Competition

The BMW X3 competes in one of the hottest segments in the industry. Luxury compact SUVs are more popular and more accessible than ever. The real challenge lies in offering a vehicle that meets the expectations of an increasingly demanding clientele while remaining reliable and durable. BMW appears to have found the right formula with the X3, a model that is difficult to criticize.

Rivals

Acura RDX, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Audi Q5, Buick Envision, Cadillac XT5, Genesis GV70, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, Lexus NX, Lincoln Corsair, Maserati Grecale, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Porsche Macan, Volvo XC60

Design and Technology

With its imposing front end and robust silhouette, the BMW X3 certainly makes a strong impression on the road. It's a model that doesn't go unnoticed. BMW offers attractive paint colors and stunning wheel designs for its SUV. Overall, there is nothing negative to say about its exterior styling.

Personally, I find the interior somewhat understated, but that is also what gives the model a sense of calm that is hard to find elsewhere. Certain interior trims allow the X3 to take on a more distinctive personality, but overall, it is a very comfortable vehicle with an ideal driving position. Its digital dashboard is clear and easy to read, and the navigation system is smooth and intuitive.

Performance

The 2026 BMW X3 offers two mechanical options, starting with the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This setup allows the Bavarian SUV to maintain an average fuel consumption of 8.1 L/100 km. As for the M50 version, it features a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine delivering 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, paired with the same mild-hybrid system found in the 2.0-liter engine. In both cases, power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive comes standard.

Weak Points

The BMW X3 offers a wide range of options, and the price can climb quickly with some of them. Its sporty driving dynamics may also not appeal to everyone.

Strengths

It is an elegant, dynamic, and very enjoyable vehicle to drive. The BMW X3 is also spacious and versatile. It can tow up to 4,850 pounds, which places it well ahead of much of the competition in this regard.

Signature Element

The BMW X3 is a true benchmark in its category.

Final Word

The BMW X3 is the vehicle I recommend to buyers making their first foray into the luxury vehicle segment. It isn't overly niche and delivers a well-rounded overall experience. In short, it's a model that owners rarely regret choosing.
