The next BMW 4 Series Cabriolet will show a softer side

Goals are changing over the years, and being able to evolve is German automaker BMW strongest skill. With new and strict fuel economy and emissions regulations coming up in the next few years, it is now more than ever important to have the lightest possible cars in order to be efficient.

This is why BMW announced that their next 4 Series Convertible, as well as the new and yet unnamed roadster that will replace the BMW Z4 in some time, will be equipped with a more conventional power soft top, instead of the present retractable hard top.

The decision was made mainly because a cloth soft top is way lighter than a hard one, mostly made of metal. As they want the car to be lighter, this was an intelligent choice to make. The car will also benefit from new composite materials such as carbon fiber in the future. The soft top will also allow the driver to open and close the top in less than 20 seconds to a speed up to 40 km/h. With the hard top, the task takes a bit more than 20 seconds and can only be done to a maximal speed of 17 km/h.

We will still have to wait a while to see this new BMW 4 Series Cabriolet, and to see if BMW will keep up with its decision, as the next version of the sport car is not scheduled to arrive on the market before 2021.
